Clinical Research Center
The Clinical Research Center at Bellingham Asthma, Allergy & Immunology Clinic has been conducting medical trials since 1994. Over the years, hundreds of clinical research volunteers have participated in studies for many conditions including asthma, allergies, sinusitis, chronic cough, immunodeficiency, chronic hives and others.

About Clinical Research
Clinical studies are a form of research using human volunteers that try to add to medical knowledge. Trials typically evaluate new ways to prevent, detect or safely treat diseases. Clinical trials are carefully designed to obtain information that is scientifically sound.
Clinical trials are guided by a protocol, a research plan that is created for each individual study. Protocols must be approved by special committees called institutional review boards (IRB) which make sure that protocols are ethical and minimize risks to the subjects who participate in the study.
Pros of Participating in a Study
- Studies enable you to try new treatments for your condition that may not be available elsewhere.
- Study treatments may have fewer side effects or work better than your current treatments.
- Research improves medical care for all of us.
- There is no cost to participate in a clinical study, and in some cases, you will receive a stipend for your time.
Cons of Participating in a Study
- Study treatments may have unexpected side effects or risks.
- Volunteers cannot choose which treatment (new medicine vs. placebo) they receive.
- Once the study is over, the new treatment may not be available for awhile or affordable, even if it was helpful.
- The study treatment may not be effective for you.

Eligibility
Before you can join a trial, you must meet the criteria required for the study. All trials have inclusion criteria (factors that are necessary to participate) and exclusion criteria (factors that would make you ineligible to participate).
#2
Informed Consent
If you meet eligibility criteria, you will be asked to review a written informed consent document. The informed consent will tell you about the purpose of the study, what is known about the study treatment, the possible risks and benefits, what is involved with participating (study visits, tests, etc), and how your identity and information will be protected. If you agree to the terms, you will be asked to sign the informed consent form. Any questions you have will be answered to your satisfaction before you sign.
#3
Join the Study
Once you agree to participate, you will begin the first steps of the study. The Clinical Research Center staff and providers at Bellingham Asthma & Allergy are always available to answer your questions. Your participation in the study is voluntary and you can leave the study at any time. This will not jeopardize any other care you receive at BAA.
