Welcome to Summer Allergy Season in Bellingham

Summer is here, and for many of us in the Pacific Northwest, that means more than just sunshine and trail time — it also means allergy season is in full swing. Here’s what’s likely triggering your symptoms and how to get ahead of them.

What’s Stirring Up Trouble This Summer?

  • Grass Pollen: Late spring and summer are peak season for grass pollen — one of the most common culprits behind sneezing, itchy eyes, and that general miserable feeling.
  • Weed Pollen: Weeds produce highly potent pollen that travels easily on the wind, making it hard to avoid even on calm days.
  • Outdoor Mold: Warm, humid weather and damp spots (think compost piles, leaf litter, and shaded areas) create the perfect breeding ground for mold spores.
  • Smog & Air Pollution: Summer heat and sunlight react with pollutants to raise ozone levels — which can inflame your respiratory tract and worsen asthma or allergy symptoms.

How to Manage Symptoms This Season

The best strategy? Reduce your exposure and treat symptoms early (before they get the best of you).

1. Track and Time It Right:

Check local pollen and air quality forecasts before heading outside. Pollen counts tend to peak in the early morning, so plan outdoor activities for late afternoon or right after a good rain.

2. Rinse Off When You Come In:

Shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors. Pollen clings to hair, skin, and fabric, and can keep irritating you long after you’ve come inside.

3. Clean Up Your Indoor Air:

Keep windows closed at home and in your car, run the AC, and consider a HEPA air purifier in your bedroom for cleaner air while you sleep.

4. Try Nasal Irrigation:

A Neti Pot or sterile saline spray can flush pollen and mucus out of your nasal passages and provide real relief — especially on high-count days.

5. Use OTC Medications Wisely:

Non-drowsy antihistamines (like Zyrtec or Claritin) and nasal steroid sprays (like Flonase) can make a big difference. Start them before your symptoms peak for best results.
